Things We Need To Prepare Your Taxes

This is a list of almost everything needed to prepare an accurate tax return. Some of the information below may not apply to you.

  • Social Security cards and dates of birth for you, your spouse, and your dependents
  • Identification card (such as driver’s license or State ID)
  • Health Insurance Coverage Forms (1095-A,1095-B,1095-C)

**Please note any self-employed income over $400 must be reported to the IRS

  1. W-2 forms for you and your spouse
  2. 1099-NEC forms for you and your spouse
  3. 1099-G forms for unemployment income, or state or local tax refunds
  4. SSA-1099 for Social Security benefits received
  5. 1099-R, Form 8606 for payments/distributions from IRAs or retirement plans
  6. 1099-INT, 1099-DIV,1099-B, or K-1s for investment or interest income
  7. 1099-K, merchant card and Third Party Network Payments
  1. 1099-S forms for income from sale of a property
  2. Miscellaneous income: jury duty, gambling winnings, Medical Savings Account, scholarships, etc.
  3. Copies of last year’s tax return for you and your spouse (required for first time clients)
  4. Bank account number and routing number, if depositing your refund directly into your account
  1. Business or farming income - profit/loss statement, capital equipment information
  2. Rental property income and expenses: profit/loss statement, suspended loss information
  3. Prior year installment sale information - Forms 6252, principal and interest collected during the year, SSN and address for payer
  4. 1099-C forms for cancellation of debt
  1. Form 1098-E for student loan interest paid (or loan statements for student loans)
  2. Form 1098-T for tuition paid (or receipts/canceled checks for tuition paid for post-high school)

Canceled checks or receipts for expenses paid for classroom supplies, etc.

The items listed below can help reduce the amount of your income that is taxed, which can increase your tax refund, or lower the amount you owe.

  1. Records of IRA contributions made during the year
  2. Receipts for any qualifying energy-efficient home improvements (solar, windows, etc.)
  3. Records of Medical Savings Account (MSA) contributions
  4. Self-employed health insurance payment records
  5. Records of moving expenses
  6. Alimony paid
  7. Keogh, SEP, SIMPLE, and other self-employed pension plans

Deductions and credits

The government offers a number of deductions and credits to help lower the tax on individuals, which means more money in your pocket.

You’ll need the following documentation to make sure you get all the deductions and credits you deserve:

  1. Child care costs: provider’s name, address, tax ID, and amount paid
  2. Education costs: Form 1098-T, education expenses
    Adoption costs: SSN of child; records of legal, medical and transportation costs
  3. Forms 1098: Mortgage interest, private mortgage insurance (PMI), and points you paid
  4. Investment interest expenses
  5. Charitable donations: cash amounts, official charity receipts, canceled checks; value of donated property; miles driven and out-of-pocket
  6. expenses
  7. Medical and dental expense records
  8. Casualty and theft losses: amount of damage, insurance reimbursements
  9. Records/amounts of other miscellaneous tax deductions: union dues; unreimbursed employee
  10. Expenses (uniforms, supplies, seminars, continuing education, publications, travel, etc.)
  11. Records of home business expenses, home size/office size, home expenses
  12. Rental property income/expenses: profit/loss statement, rental property suspended loss information
  1. State and local income taxes paid
  2. Real estate taxes paid
  3. Personal property taxes
  4. Vehicle license fees based on value of vehicle
  1. Last year’s AGI-Adjusted Gross Income, please refer to line 37 if filed form 1040
    *(First Time Clients Need The AGI)
  2. Estimated tax payments made during the year (self-employed)
  3. Prior-year refund applied to current year and/or any amount paid with an extension to file
  4.  Foreign bank account information: location, name of bank, account number, peak value of account during the year
